Understanding General Liability in Trucking

It’s often the overlooked details, the ones beyond the miles traveled, that influence a trucking operation’s success. I find that general liability risks are as varied as the routes your trucks take. They lie in places less obvious than highways, yet equally crucial: loading docks, customer facilities, and terminal premises.

Loading and unloading exposures present unique challenges. Imagine a scenario where, during unloading, goods are damaged or a worker is injured. These incidents often evade commercial auto policies, venturing instead into the realm of general liability. Complexity arises when diverse factors blend: human interaction, cargo integrity, and environmental variables.

Then, there are the terminals. Serving as the anchor points of an operation, they hold their own set of premises liabilities. Consider slip and fall incidents or damage caused to third-party vehicles parked on premises. These don’t typically fall under the cover of auto insurance, requiring a broader vision and deliberate planning to mitigate risks.

Exposures Outside Auto Coverage

Customer facilities present another dimension. Once you’re off the road and into their grounds, the landscape shifts again. The interactions between drivers and customer staff, equipment use, and movement within someone else’s property open up potential exposures.

Non-driving incidents—be it bodily injury or property damage—require equal attention. Drivers are most at ease behind the wheel, yet the risks often find them when away from it. A cautious approach, fortified by sound liability coverage, nudges unexpected surprises out of the equation.

The avenues of exposure in trucking are vast but discernible with the right lens. It’s about looking beyond the competitive hustle and understanding where true stability finds its roots: in comprehensive foresight.
